The ICA was quoted this week on the importance of law enforcement taking domain thefts seriously. In a situation unfortunately unique for the forward thinking shown by state police, the New Jersey State Police have pursued their case against Daniel Goncalves, 25, of Union, New Jersey for hacking into an online account belonging to one of the owners of the P2P.com domain name to steal and later sell the domain to an unsuspecting buyer. While the case reminds domain owners, law enforcement and criminals alike that domain theft is a serious crime, Jeremiah Johnston, ICA president, commented to the associated press that it “should serve as a wake-up call for other law enforcement agencies. ‘They’re usually a few years behind new technology trends,’ Johnston said. ‘That’s frustrating when you have domain names selling for seven figures.’
