On May 5-6 American University in Washington, DC will host a program on “Global Internet Governance: Research and Public Policy Challenges for the Next Decade”. Registration for the event, which will also be webcast, is free and can be made at  http://www.amiando.com/GigaNET-DC-2011.html?page=518918.

The program will feature a May 5th keynote speech by Assistant Secretary for Commerce Larry Strickling, who harshly criticized ICANN’s recent decision to approve the .xxx registry and is overseeing U.S. consideration of whether ICANN’s administration of the IANA authoritative root server contract should be renewed.

Other topics to be addressed by a distinguished lineup of speakers include:

•    “Do not track” proposals and their potential impact on Internet advertising

•    Cybersecurity and Internet freedom in the age of Wikileaks

•    A multifaceted examination of ICANN and its relationship to governments, moderated by top NTIA staffer Fiona Alexander

•    Balancing trademark and registrant rights in the UDRP

•    The impact of social media on Internet and real world governance

While ICA plans to attend in person, any domain professional with an interest in the public policy issues that will shape the evolving competitive and Internet governance environments would be well advised to check out the program – especially given the free registration and opportunity for remote participation.
